Rev. Charles Sweeting, Class of 1956

Rev. Charles Sweeting

The Rev. Charles Sweeting, youngest child of the late Allan D. and Dorothy Sweeting, was born in Nassau on November 09, 1940. In 1964, he married the former Sheran Johnson and the couple has one son, Andrew.

In 1945, Rev. Sweeting commenced his education at Queen's College, Nassau. Having successfully passed the Junior Cambridge School Certificate in 1956, he was encouraged to remain in school to sit the Higher Cambridge School Certificate, being only the second person to do so in the history of Queen's College. In 1959, he achieved passes in Mathematics, Biology, Religious Knowledge and General Studies.

In 1961, he traveled to the United Kingdom and after admission to Bristol University, trained as a Biology teacher. He graduated in 1965 with an Upper Second Class Honours Degree in Psychology and then entered the Arts Faculty at Bristol, graduating in 1968 with a degree in Theology.

After returning from studies in the United Kingdom, Rev. Sweeting served in Jamaica as an Assistant Minister for two years. Upon his return to the Bahamas in 1970, he served as Minister in Abaco.  In 1971, he was appointed Chaplain at Queen's College in Nassau where he also taught Religious Education, Mathematics and Social Studies. In addition, he was responsible for the establishment of the Guidance Counselor's Department at the school.  In August 1972, he was given a full-time appointment at Queen's College with the added responsibility of supervising the Out Island Hostel.

In September 1973, Rev. Sweeting was appointed Principal of St. Paul's Methodist College in Freeport, Grand Bahama. Upon his return to Nassau in 1979, Rev. Sweeting was appointed Principal of Queen's College, a position he held until 1994 when he became the Head of the Queen's College Development Office.

On September 01, 1995, the Rev. Charles Sweeting was installed as President of the Bahamas Conference of The Methodist Church, a position which he held until August 2002. During this time, Rev. Sweeting also served as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of Queen's College for seven years. His loyalty and commitment to Queen's College has never been questioned and he is still involved in the welfare of the school.

Rev. Sweeting was made a Justice of the Peace in 2000 and was awarded the O.B.E. by Her Majesty the Queen in 2001 for his outstanding contribution to Education and Religion in the Bahamas.

 

 
Sir Durward Knowles, Class of 1934

Sir Durward Knowles was born in Nassau to the late Captain Harry and Charlotte Knowles on November 2, 1917. He began his educational career at Queen's College in September 1928, completing his studies in December 1934. After graduating, he immediately followed in his father's footsteps working on the pilot boats.
 

It is not a surprise that with his passion for the waters, Sir Durward took a keen interest in sailing and excelled at every level of this competitive sport. In 1947, he won the World Championships in sailing for the Star Class. In 1956, he went on to win the Olympic Bronze Medal along with Sloane Farrington, in Melbourne, Australia. He made Bahamian history in 1964 when, along with Cecil Cooke, he won the Olympic Gold Medal in Tokyo. Sir Durward continued competing in Olympic Sailing for a record of eight Olympics; the last being Korea in 1988 at the age of seventy, making him one of the oldest and most successful Olympians.

In 1964, Sir Durward was awarded the O.B.E. at Government House by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and in, 1996, was knighted by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace for his outstanding work in the community and for winning the Gold and Bronze Medals in the Olympics. In 1997, Sir Durward was also awarded the Bahamas Order of Merit, B.O.M.

Sir Durward generously gives of his time, serving on many community based committees, including Chairman of the Queen's College Foundation, Honorary Vice President of Charity Guide No.37, Co-Chairman of One Bahamas, Vice President of the Bahamas Olympic Association, Member of Ebenezer Methodist Church Board of Trustees, President of the Bahamas Association for the Physically Disabled, Past President of the Rotary Club of East Nassau, Member of the Bahamas National Board for the Disabled and Older Persons. He, along with Bobby Symonette, were the founders of BASRA. He is also well known for his charitable contributions to various organizations and to the various regattas. He is now formally retired, after serving 50 years as a Harbour Pilot, but still goes into the office on a daily basis.

In 1947, Sir Durward married Holly Shaw and they have three children, Jill, Randy and Charlotte and six grandchildren. Last year, Sir Durward celebrated his 60th Wedding Anniversary as well as his 90th Birthday!


 
Captain Geoffrey Brown, Class of 1944

Geoffrey Brown

Captain Geoffrey Brown was born in Nassau on June 6, 1927 and grew up in a large family along the eastern shoreline of New Providence. He entered Queen's College on Charlotte Street in 1933 and completed his schooling in December 1944.

Shortly after leaving Queen's College, Geoffrey Brown followed his interest in boating and joined a merchant ship that serviced the Bahamas, Cuba, Haiti and Florida. Later, with his brother, he owned and operated three fishing charter boats. In 1951, he was honoured by the Major General of the US Air Force for his heroic effort in recovering bodies from a sunken wreckage off the coast of New Providence.

In the 1960's, Captain Brown turned from the open waters to set his sights on land and launched his career as a realtor. He and his partners went on to develop many vibrant communities for Bahamians. Still today, he continues to work full time with his real estate company, Brown, Morley & Smith.

Captain Brown is dedicated to serving his community, his church and his school. In his younger days, he was involved with Boy Scouts, serving as Scout Master. Along with Sir Durward Knowles, Captain Brown started a Sea Scouts Troop. He proudly served as Band Leader for the Scout Drum & Bugle Band. Captain Brown is active with The Bahamas Conference of The Methodist Church serving on numerous church related boards and committees. At Queen's College, he is one of the longest serving members of the Board of Governors and Board of Trustees. He also is a Trustee of the Queen's College Foundation.

Captain Brown married Janet Thompson in 1954. They have two children, Angela and Geoffrey, as well as three grandsons and one granddaughter. At the age of eighty, Captain Geoffrey Brown enjoys an active and fulfilling life!
